How We Rank Glasgow Solicitors
Every ranked list on Best Glasgow Lawyers is an editorial assessment built from published, checkable evidence. No firm can pay to change its position. This page explains what we look at, how much weight each factor carries, and the limits of what a ranking can tell you.
What a ranking on this site means
A ranking is our view of how strongly the published evidence supports a firm for a particular type of legal work in Glasgow. It is not a measure of the outcome you will receive, it is not a guarantee of quality, and it does not mean that a firm lower on the list, or not listed at all, would serve you less well. Many excellent solicitors do not publish much about themselves.
Rankings are assessed separately for each legal category. A firm that ranks highly for employment law may not appear in our family law list at all.
The evidence we assess
Each firm is assessed against six criteria for each category in which it offers a service. Each criterion is scored from 0 to 5 by an editor, using the evidence recorded against the listing.
| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Specialism focus | 25% |
| Credentials | 20% |
| Independent recognition | 20% |
| Glasgow presence | 15% |
| Client feedback | 10% |
| Service clarity | 10% |
Specialism focus looks at whether the firm has a dedicated team and service for that area of law, and how much of its practice it represents.
Credentials covers Law Society of Scotland accredited specialists in the relevant field, relevant professional memberships, and, where it matters to the client, whether the firm states that it offers legal aid.
Independent recognition covers independent legal directories such as The Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners, where we have seen the ranking ourselves. Awards are considered only where they come from credible, independent bodies.
Glasgow presence considers whether the firm has an established office in Glasgow, and whether the relevant team works from it.
Client feedback uses public review information that we have checked ourselves, with the platform, the figures and the date recorded. Small samples carry little weight. Where we could not find reliable review information, this criterion is recorded as not assessed and is left out of the calculation rather than counted as zero.
Clarity of service information considers how clearly the firm explains what it does, who it acts for, how the process works and how to get in touch, including whether it publishes fee information.
How the order is decided
The weighted scores produce an evidence score out of 100 for each firm in each category. Firms with the highest evidence scores form the ranked shortlist for that category. Other qualifying firms are listed underneath, unranked and in alphabetical order.
An editor may adjust an order where the recorded evidence justifies it, for example where a firm has an accredited specialist whose work the scores do not fully reflect. Any such adjustment is recorded internally with the reason.
We do not rank firms by review count or star rating alone, and we do not rank firms for categories where they do not offer a dedicated service.
Who is eligible to be listed
- The firm must be regulated by the Law Society of Scotland or, for the small number of organisations that provide legal services in a different form, be clearly authorised to do so.
- It must have a verified office in Glasgow or the immediate Glasgow area.
- It must offer the service for the category in which it is listed, shown by a service page or equivalent public information.
- We must be able to verify the core listing details: name, address, website and service information.
Sponsored listings and commercial relationships
Firms may in future be able to take a sponsored placement. Any sponsored placement is labelled clearly as sponsored wherever it appears, and it is shown separately from the editorial ranking. Payment never changes a firm's editorial position or score. Where the operator of this site has any other commercial relationship with a listed firm, the listing says so. See our editorial policy for details.
Keeping information up to date
Every listing shows the date it was last verified. We aim to re-check listings at least every six months, and sooner when we are told about a change. Firms can submit a correction or update at any time, and members of the public can contact us if something looks wrong.
Important
Best Glasgow Lawyers is an information directory. It is not a firm of solicitors and does not provide legal advice. Always check a solicitor's details and terms directly with the firm before instructing them. You can check whether a solicitor holds a practising certificate using the Law Society of Scotland's Find a Solicitor service.
