Why this directory exists

Choosing a solicitor is often something people do once or twice in a lifetime, usually at a stressful moment. Most of the information available is written by firms about themselves, and many directories list every firm the same way or rank them by paid placement. We wanted to build something more useful: a directory that shows its evidence, explains the law in plain English, and is honest about the limits of any ranking.

What we do

• Research firms carefully. Every listing is built from the firm's own published information and independent sources, with each source and the date it was checked recorded.
• Explain the law in Scotland. Scots law differs from the law in England and Wales in many areas, from buying a house to divorce and executries. Our guides use Scottish terminology and link to official sources.
• Rank transparently. Our ranking methodology is published in full, and every ranked listing shows the evidence behind it.
• Correct mistakes quickly. Firms and readers can tell us about errors, and we update listings when information is confirmed.

What we do not do

• We do not provide legal advice and we are not a firm of solicitors.
• We do not publish invented reviews, ratings or testimonials.
• We do not let payment influence editorial rankings.
• We do not claim that any firm is objectively the best. Our rankings reflect published evidence.
